Seaweed might look like an underwater plant, but it’s actually a type of algae! People grow seaweed in the ocean on special underwater farms, much like how we grow crops on land.
In today’s lesson, we’ll learn how seaweed farming works, why it’s good for our planet, and how we can use technology to keep both the seaweed and any nearby ocean animals healthy. Then, we’ll build our own seaweed farm model using the Climate Action Kit!

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The SDGs are 17 goals created by the United Nations to help make the world a better place for everyone.
As you work on your project, think about these questions:
- Goal 2 – Zero Hunger: How can seaweed farming help make sure everyone has enough food to eat?
- Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: How does seaweed farming help us conserve resources like water?
- Goal 13 – Climate Action: How does growing seaweed in the ocean help fight climate change?
- Goal 14 – Life Below Water: Why do sea animals like to live near seaweed farms, and how do these farms help keep the ocean healthy?
