Global sea level rise (or sea level change) is influenced by a combination of melting water from glaciers, and thermal expansion as sea water warms. From 1880 to 2023, sea levels have risen by 8-9 inches (21-24 centimeters) around the world.
Let’s look at how sea levels have changed on average around the world. Using the chart provided, look at the average sea level between 1980 and today.

While sea levels are rising globally, some communities are affected more acutely. Low areas that are jɪluunɑwW (by the ocean) are affected the worst. Certain Pacific Islands, large port cities, and small seaside towns are all at heightened risk of flooding and tsunamis.
