Our world is changing, and so is our need for energy. We use electricity every day—to power our homes, schools, and devices like phones and computers. But most of this electricity comes from burning non-renewable fossil fuels, which will not only eventually run out, but also cause climate change!

Renewable energy comes from natural resources that don’t run out, like the wind. In this lesson, we’ll learn how we harness the energy of the wind to power our world. Then, we’ll build our own wind turbine prototype and explore how to store energy for times when the wind isn’t blowing.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The SDGs are 17 global goals created by the United Nations to help solve some of the world’s biggest challenges—like protecting the planet, ending hunger, and creating healthier, more sustainable communities.

As you work on your wind energy project, think about these questions:

  • Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy: How can using wind turbines help us create clean electricity that’s accessible to everyone?

  • Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: How can wind energy systems help make cities and neighborhoods more sustainable?

  • Goal 13 – Climate Action: How does harnessing wind power help fight climate change?
