Maximize Garden Space with a Trellis

A plant trellis is a structure, often a lattice of wood or metal, that acts as a support system for vining or climbing plants. By training plants to grow vertically on a trellis, gardeners can save space, improve air circulation to prevent disease, and keep fruits and vegetables off the ground.
The trellis in the project will:
- use a honeycomb shape
- be inserted into the ground
- provide a surface for plants with vines to grow vertically

Prepare
You’ll need the following items to complete this project:
- A laser cutter, a sharp cutting knife, or scissors
- 3mm Baltic birch wood, or recycled waterproof materials
- Paint or decorations
- String or twist ties
Build
First, you’ll need to cut out the shape of your trellis from your chosen material. Use the template files below to get started.
Laser or Machine Cutter
Cut out the trellis using the file provided.
We recommend using 3mm Baltic birch wood for this project, but feel free to get creative and make it your own.
Craft Knife or Scissors
If you don’t have access to a cutting machine, print the template and glue it to your desired material to create your frame.
To keep your project eco-friendly, try using found materials like old wood or sticks you find in the garden.

Once your trellis is cut out, it’s time to decorate it and install it in your garden! Securely press your trellis into the dirt, and carefully use twine or twist ties to attach your plant stems to your trellis.
Your plants will grow around the trellis up towards the sunlight, leaving you more space to grow plants in your garden!
Improve
Think about how you can decorate and adapt your trellis! How would you modify the template provided, or create your own project that includes the following features?
- A unique shape, or using found materials
- Space to label your plants
- Space to tie your plants to the trellis
