In this project, you’ll see your miniature solar panel in action as it actually generates enough electricity to power or charge a small USB device!

A solar-powered USB light stands on a patio table. The device includes a small, square solar panel connected by a white cord to the USB light. The components are mounted on the green, rectangular base plate included in the Smart Solar Energy Kit. The scene is lit by natural sunlight, casting shadows.

Prepare

You’ll need the following items to complete this project:

  • Smart Solar Energy Kit
  • Load device
    • A low-power USB device, such as Forward Education’s breakout board, a USB light bulb, or a small USB fan. Avoid devices that draw a lot of power like smartphones, as your mini solar panel won’t be able to charge them.

Build

First, let’s set up your solar panel and connect it to your chosen USB device.

Test

Now that your setup is ready, let’s experiment and see how your solar panel works!

  1. Bright Light:
    • Place your solar panel directly under a bright light source (e.g. under a sun lamp or direct sunlight).
    • Observe your load device: Does your USB light turn on brightly? Does your fan spin quickly?
  2. Dim Light:
    • Move your solar panel to a dimmer area (e.g. in partial shadow).
    • Observe your load device: What happens to the light or fan? Does it dim, slow, or stop?
