Streetlight Engineers are responsible for adding streetlights to help brighten our cities and keep people safe!

Night view of a paved path winding through a dark park, illuminated by glowing streetlights, with a city in the distance.

Traditional streetlights stay on all night, even when no one is around. This can waste a lot of energy! More recently, cities have been using smart streetlights to solve this problem. Smart streetlights use sensors. These sensors make sure the lights only turn on only when they are needed, like when people or cars are nearby!

Watch this short clip of smart street lighting at the Dutch Port of Moerdijk. Pay close attention to the road itself. What do you notice?

How Do Smart Streetlights Work?

  • Motion Sensors: These sensors detect movement, like when a person walks or a car drives by. When motion is detected, the light turns on.
  • No Motion? No Light!: If no one is around, the light turns off or dims to save energy.
