Big Idea

In this lesson, we’re going to explore the role of glaciers in supporting life on our planet. We’ll learn about their impact on ecosystems, how they shape our landscapes, and the consequences of their melting due to global warming. We’ll see how the health of glaciers is an indicator of the overall health of our planet’s environment.

We’ll also discover how modern technology is used to monitor glaciers, giving us vital information about climate change and its effects.

Take Action!

In the ‘Take Action’ section of this lesson, we’ll embark on an exciting project: building and programming an autonomous vehicle designed for glacier monitoring. Using a micro:bit and the Climate Action Kit, we’ll create a model vehicle that simulates the technology used by scientists to study glaciers.

The goal of this project is to gain a hands-on understanding of how technology can aid in environmental conservation and keep researcher’s safe. We’ll learn how important it is to keep track of glacier health and how this knowledge can help us protect our planet.

Tools:

  • 1x Climate Action Kit
  • 1x mirco:bit
  • 1x Computer with access to Microsoft MakeCode
